Presented by the Embassy of Ireland in Belgium, and Ireland's Permanent Representation to the European Union, the Irish Presidency Closing Concert celebrates Ireland’s rich musical tradition through a programme that brings together contemporary Irish composition, traditional influence, and European symphonic repertoire.

At the centre of the evening is the world premiere of the winning entry from the Brussels Chamber Ensemble’s Sounds of Ireland Composition Competition, an initiative supporting emerging Irish compositional talent and inviting new interpretations of Irish musical identity and tradition.

Founded in Brussels and made up of EU professionals and young musicians from across Europe, the Brussels Chamber Ensemble has become known for its Presidency concerts marking the rotating Council Presidencies of the European Union. Bringing together musicians from different national and cultural backgrounds, the ensemble reflects the spirit of collaboration and exchange at the heart of the European project.

The evening opens with Bill Whelan’s Cloudsong and Reel Around the Sun from the Riverdance Suite, works that have become internationally recognised for their energy, rhythm, and reimagining of Irish musical traditions for contemporary audiences. Charles Villiers Stanford’s Irish Rhapsody No. 1 draws together traditional Irish melodies and late Romantic orchestral writing, including its well-known orchestral setting of “Danny Boy.” Following the interval, Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 brings the programme to a powerful close, placing Irish musical traditions in conversation with one of the great works of the European symphonic canon.

Together, the programme reflects Ireland’s musical heritage as something both deeply rooted and outward-looking, shaped through tradition, reinterpretation, and continuing cultural exchange across Europe.
