Ireland holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the eighth time from 1 July to 31 December 2026. We take on this responsibility at a significant moment for Europe and the wider international community.

Across our continent, people are facing economic uncertainty, geopolitical instability and the effects of rapid global change. At times like these, the European Union is strongest when we work together – responding with purpose, solidarity and confidence in our shared future.

Ireland's Presidency will be guided by a clear commitment to delivery, cooperation and the values that underpin our Union. The principle of ní neart go cur le chéile – strength through unity – reflects both the spirit of the European project and the approach Ireland will bring to the Presidency.

By working together, Europe is better placed to protect its citizens, support sustainable prosperity and uphold the democratic values that define who we are, both at home and on the global stage.

Preparing for the Presidency has been a truly national effort. We have worked closely with Member States, EU institutions and stakeholders across society to shape an ambitious and outward-looking policy programme. Just as importantly, we have listened to people across Ireland. Through consultations, community outreach and engagement with young people, we heard directly about the issues that matter most. These conversations reinforced the importance of a European Union that delivers practical benefits for people's everyday lives while remaining rooted in solidarity, democracy and opportunity.

Our policy programme is built around three closely connected priorities: competitiveness, values and security. Together, these priorities reflect the need for a Europe that remains economically strong, socially cohesive and equipped to respond to an increasingly uncertain world. Throughout our Presidency, Ireland will act as an honest broker, working constructively with partners to advance the Council's agenda and support progress on key legislative and policy initiatives.

Over the coming months, Ireland will host more than 270 official Presidency events, including 22 Informal Ministerial Meetings, in locations across the country. These events will provide valuable opportunities for dialogue, cooperation and the exchange of ideas. They will also allow us to showcase Ireland's culture, communities and longstanding commitment to European partnership.

Ireland will host a summit meeting of the European Political Community, the largest event of its kind ever held in the country, alongside an informal meeting of the European Council. In Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg, we will work closely with Member States, the European Commission and the European Parliament to advance initiatives that strengthen Europe's resilience, competitiveness and engagement with the wider world.

Ireland has always believed in the value of international cooperation and in the European Union as a force for peace, prosperity and progress. As we prepare to assume the Presidency once again, we do so with ambition for Europe's future and confidence in what can be achieved when countries work together towards a common purpose. We look forward to working with our European partners to help build a stronger, more secure and more prosperous future for all.
