A message from An Tánaiste and Minister for Finance, Simon Harris T.D.
As Ireland assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European for the eighth time, we do so at a pivotal moment for our Union and for our shared future.
The challenges facing our Union are significant: growing geopolitical instability, economic uncertainty, the climate and digital transitions, and the need to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness, resilience and security in a rapidly changing world.
At moments like this, the European Union matters more than ever.
Ireland approaches this Presidency with a clear sense of responsibility, purpose and excitement.
For the next six months, we will work in partnership with Member States, the European institutions and our international partners to help advance a stronger, safer and more competitive European Union - one that delivers for citizens, protects our shared values, and is equipped to meet the challenges of a changing world.
A particular priority during our Presidency will be helping to advance Europe’s economic resilience and long-term prosperity. Ireland will support efforts to strengthen the foundations of sustainable growth, deepen the Single Market, enhance Europe’s competitiveness, and advance important discussions on the European Union’s long-term budget - the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2028–2034.
But Ireland’s Presidency is about much more than policy and negotiations.
This Presidency belongs to the people of Ireland.
We want this to be a Presidency that is seen and felt in communities across our country - bringing Europe closer to citizens and making the European project more visible in everyday life.
That is why every county in Ireland will play a role - through twinning initiatives, counties across Ireland will build meaningful links with countries across Europe. A vibrant cultural programme will bring the richness and diversity of Europe to towns and cities across Ireland, while showcasing Ireland’s own creativity, culture and traditions to our European partners.
Education will also be central to our Presidency. Children and young people across the country will have opportunities to learn more about Europe, the benefits the EU has brought and will bring to Ireland in the future. They will be able to engage in debate and consider the role they can play in shaping the future of our Union.
This Presidency is a unique opportunity - not only to lead the EU at a pivotal time, but to welcome the EU to Ireland.
